My Movie List!

blog1My first ever International movie watching (or non-watching) experience was at the age of five in a small town movie theatre called “Anand” (translation: Happiness). My father took the entire family to watch…. Jurassic Park!! My mother was literally glaring at him through the entire movie as to why he would think of taking us young kids to a movie like that. Fortunately for my poor mother, I slept through the entire movie (If I had woken up, am pretty sure my own sound effects would have rendered a very terrible movie watching experience for our neighbors. Hee). My sister not very fondly remembers watching the movie through her little fingers and crying pretty much whenever a Dinosaur came on the screen.

The next year saw the revolution brought in by the cable networks all over India. Till then, our television pretty much broadcasted only 3-4 channels (aah..the good old Doordarshan!!). During the summer vacation of 1996, my sister and me decided to check out all the channels, while my parents were not home (of course!!). That’s how we stumbled upon a channel wherein they broadcasted English movies (Gasp!).We sat down and watched the movie that was playing and well….WE LOVED IT!! It was a Chinese/Japanese film which was dubbed in English. It’s a pity that we still don’t know the name of the film. Needless to say, both of us were pretty much addicted to Star Movies by the end of the year.

Apart from the Hollywood movies, I also used to watch a lot of Chinese Martial Arts films, which were dubbed either in English or Hindi (My guilty Pleasure). I only knew two Chinese actors at the time, Jackie Chan and Jet Li. I used to dream of becoming a Wuxia heroine as a schoolgirl. HA! Who knew that one month of Karate classes were enough for me to just give up that dream??

My first Korean movie was “My little bride”, which was recommended by one of my classmates. I thought it was Chinese, as I was not aware of anything Korean at the time. I still didn’t make the connection until I watched Cinderella’s sister and felt that the actress is familiar (Prof. Google pointed out the obvious!).

The list below is not exactly my entire Asian Movie Resume as I hardly remember any of the Japanese/Chinese films that I’ve seen during my school days. I’ve not included Hollywood/Indian Cinema in the list as there’s just….too many!!

PS: The red ones are my all time favorites!

  1. Hi, amysticlady… I’m bee. I just read a comment on dramajjang’s Love That Makes You Cry… I’m a huge fan of Bollywood. It’s my second foreign entertainment love, with my first being Japanese anime — there’s third J-drama, fourth T-drama, fifth C-drama, sixth K-drama&Kpop and there’s just no turning back for me, hahaa 😉

I wonder if you can add Bollywood movies in your list, please? But if you’re not a fan, then we can’t help it, hehee 😀 Thanks a lot…

    • Helloooo!! Thanks for dropping by & leaving a comment! Really means a lot to me 😁
As for your suggestion, I will add my recommendations for Bollywood movies as well. 👍 Am not a fan of Masala B-flicks though, so don’t expect me to recommend Karan Johar /Sid Malhotra/Yash Chopra movies here. He he.
Also, have you tried any other Indian language movies apart from Bollywood?
